Why It Matters

Why masonry problems can't wait.

Masonry is one of the longest-lasting trades when it is built correctly, and one of the hardest to fix when it is not. New Jersey freeze-thaw cycles are tough on mortar and stone. Water enters a tight joint, freezes overnight, expands, and slowly pries the work apart. Over time, that movement shows up as settled steps, leaning walls, or brick faces popping off. Solid footings, the right mortar mix, and proper drainage are what let masonry outlast the rest of the property.

Common warning signs

  • Front steps that have settled, cracked, or pulled away from the stoop — often a footing issue.
  • Retaining walls leaning forward because of missing drainage or weep holes.
  • Spalling brick and crumbling mortar joints from repeated freeze-thaw.
  • Hollow-sounding stone veneer ready to detach from the wall.
  • Walkways that pitch the wrong way and direct water toward the foundation.
Built To Code · Finished With Care

How we build it — and what makes it ours.

Real masonry starts below ground. We dig past the frost line so winter cannot heave the work up, compact the subgrade, and pour footings with rebar where the wall carries a load. Brick and stone go up one piece at a time in a bond pattern that fits the house — running bond, Flemish, or ashlar. Mortar is mixed to match the existing work; a mix that is too hard will tear the face off the brick in the next freeze. Retaining walls get weep holes, drainage stone, and filter fabric so water pressure cannot push the wall out. Lintels are properly sized and bedded over every opening. The Prestige touch: every joint hand-struck, stones laid face-by-face, and a final wash so the new work blends into the old.

How We Address It

This is how we actually do masonry.

Finished front entry steps and masonry by Prestige
Step 01

1. Footings below the frost line

We dig past frost depth, compact the subgrade, and pour real footings with rebar. This is the part no one sees, and it is the only part that decides whether the work is still standing in twenty years.

2. Laid by hand, one stone at a time

Brick and stone are set in a real bond pattern, faces chosen on site, joints kept consistent line by line. No prefab panels, no glued-on veneer — just actual masonry the way it is supposed to go up.

3. Hand-struck joints, washed, and sealed

Every joint is tooled by hand for a crisp, consistent profile. The work is washed and sealed with a breathable masonry sealer so water cannot sit in a joint long enough to freeze. That is the finish that lasts.
